The Heritage Explorer Bike Tour is back! We hope you’ll come along for the ride!
After a short hiatus, the Heritage Explorer Bike Tour will return in 2019. This time, we’ll be showcasing the newest section of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail – from Carbondale through Fell Township.
The Heritage Explorer Bike Tour has become an annual tradition to promote the development of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail. This year’s event is made extra special, as it will proudly bring our community together along our region’s newest outdoor asset. Cyclists will embark on a 20-mile stretch of a newly-debuted scenic path linking the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail to the D&H Rail Trail.
The event is a fun, family-friendly and noncompetitive event. Riders of all ages and abilities will have the chance to ride along the Heritage Trail from Carbondale, past the Stillwater Dam in Uniondale, and to Ararat Township. The 2019 Heritage Explorer Bike Tour will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2019. Cyclists will begin and end at the John Street Trailhead in Carbondale (behind the Ben Mar restaurant), coinciding with Greater Carbondale YMCA’s Fall Festival.
Riders will check-in to receive their t-shirts, information packets and sponsored giveaways. After enjoying a complimentary breakfast, they’ll choose their route length and hit the new trail. Upon returning to the park grounds, participants can enjoy a catered lunch before checking out community festival.
From kids on tricycles to longer distance cyclists, hundreds of people will enjoy the returning tradition. All are welcome to continue the fun with activities at the Greater Carbondale YMCA Fall Festival. Scheduled activities include an open swim, fitness class, bouncy house for the kids, health screenings and a cookie walk. This Fall Festival helps to support the great work accomplished everyday by the YMCA.

PARKING AND LOCATION
We’ll be excited to greet you at the John Street Trailhead on Sunday. The City of Carbondale will offer free event parking at three locations listed in the map below to make it as easy and safe as possible for you to drop off your cars, pick up your bikes and ride! The John Street Trailhead will be our metropolis for the entire day, serving as your registration point, the site of our basket raffles, your spot for a complimentary light breakfast and lunch, and your starting/finish line! (Downloadable Map and Google Maps directions at the bottom of this email)
Dozens of very generous local businesses and organizations have given back to the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail by donating baskets and prizes to be raffled off at the event. You’ll want to bring a few extra dollars or your credit/debit card for a chance at winning these awesome items, including everything from aquarium passes and experiences to a giant 65” VIZIO smart tv. Remember, all money raised benefits the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail!
After working up an appetite along the trail, you’re invited to return to the starting line for a catered lunch of sandwiches and goodies beginning at 11:00am. Your numbered bib will serve as your voucher for lunch. Turn in your bib upon arriving back and enjoy a sandwich, chips, a cookie and beverages before enjoying the basket raffle and the Greater Carbondale YMCA’s Fall Family Festival.
Enjoy plenty of family-friendly activities at the Greater Carbondale YMCA’s Fall Festival after your journey! This annual autumn tradition will feature live chainsaw carving demos, pony rides, live music, goats, games, pumpkin painting and FREE bounce houses and indoor swimming pool access. The festival runs from noon until 4pm.
**Please note that the trail surface along this section of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail is mostly gravel.**
